If you would have told me in 1988 that in 20 years I'd be having dinner with Chuck D in Spain I would have said you were str8 Looney Tunes, and resumed bumping
Nation of Millions on random shuffle for the umpteenth time in my NYU dorm room. But that's just what my RBMA comrade "Hungry Like tha" Wulf G and myself were up to this past week out here in "BCN," as it's known (peace,
Charles Laquidara - sorry, old school Boston radio reference). Despite Iberia Airlines losing his luggage on the way in from Heathrow, Chuck was chillin' like a MF (mad)villain. As we collectively tackled some delicious grilled fish, he previewed the forthcoming P.E. authorized biography, recalled the moment that he realized a DJ wasn't just some dude on WABC introducing top 40 records but someone who could actually extend the opening bars of
War's "Galaxy" ad infinitum, and otherwise good-naturedly quizzed me on methods for properly documenting hip-hop's evolution for 2010 (hint: starts with "con" ends with "text"). Apparently, the
spot in which we dined was a favorite haunt of Orson Welles, F. Scott Fitzgerald and others BITD. It was pretty perfect then that Mistachuck (
and Missuschuck) also be added to the establishment's roll call of visiting visionaries. Definitely a Hall of Fame night for yours truly.
To commemorate it, here's a simple but extremely useful P.E. remix that's kind of slid under the radar as far as I can tell: 45 King's Wild Style take on "Bring the Noise" - which I was fortunate to have Mark himself pass me a few years back. Enjoy.
